OIL-PALM
CONTRACT GROWER
African oil palm otherwise known as Elaesis guineenis is the
principal source of palm oil and is native to west and southwest of Africa. For
each Hectare (21/2 acres) of oil palm, the manual
production averages 10tonnes of fruit yielding 3,000kg (3tonnes) of palm oil
and 750kg of palm kernel yielding 250kg of High quality palm kernel oil as well
as 500kg palm kernel concentrates (PKC) Palm
Fronds and PKC are also processed for
livestock feed in Piggery. BIOFUEL is being derived from palm Oil as an
alternative source of energy in some advanced countries.
Therefore, summarily Derivatives from oil palm include Palm
Oil (of which price climbs up yearly), palm kernel, palm kernel Oil, palm kernel
cake etc.
Although Oil Palm is originated from the Tropical rain forest
of West Africa, however today it is being grown in India. Oil palm Indian Ltd;
Australia – Oil Palm Plantations of Australia and Malaysia Government which is
the major Palm Oil producer in the whole world.
All things being equal, that is if the plantation is well
managed, the yield of palm fruits increases relatively as the year advances.
For example 19th – 24th month yield/ha =7.5 tons
25th – 36th month yield/ha =10.6tons
61st - 72nd month yield/ha = 35.5 tons.
There are some basic facts that need knowing. Do you know that:

Palm seedlings stay in the nursery for between 8-9months before transplanting
into the field (plantation).

Palm seedlings transplanted begins to fruit between 2-3years.

The
dwarf (short) oil palm can be well managed and harvested?

There
are herbicides (weed killers) that can take care of your plantation?
5.
Internationally,
5.28tons of Palm Oil is sold at USD $900/ton which translates into USD4750/ha
every year.
Palm Oil is being used all over the world because of its
economic value and that is why there is need for private farmers participation
(PFP).
The major question that is readily come to mind is

It is the seedlings transplanted into the plantation that
will grow into matured Oil Palm trees. Here; from our own level we now
interfere WHO IS A CONTRACT GROWER?
A contract Grower is a farmer saddled with a responsibility
of growing a particular crop within a period of time. A contract is signed
between the contractor (Grower) and the farmer, 50%-75% of the amount is
released for the grower to execute the Project and the balance is paid at the
point of lifting the crops, the grower cannot sell out of the crops and must
make sure that they are well nourished.
Here in Nigeria, the local consumption need is yet to be met
